DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Tour (Allentown\, PA)\nThis unique educational event will showcase one of North America’s longest timber spans\, currently being built in Pennsylvania’s fast-growing Upper Macungie Township. Totaling 188\,000 square feet\, the Upper Macungie Township Community Lifestyle Center is a community hub comprising an indoor soccer field\, two flex gyms\, and an amenity building. \nThe focal point is the 130\,000-square-foot soccer field\, where hybrid glulam-steel portal frames spanning 280 feet—one of the longest timber truss clear-spans in North America—were engineered to meet the architect’s vision of an efficient yet visually appealing structure. The basketball court structures were designed with hybrid glulam-steel trusses clear-spanning up to 140 feet\, supported by a glulam frame. \nAttendees will get an up-close look at the design and construction challenges the architect\, engineer\, and contractor overcame to achieve a timber span of this scale. \nPlease join us for lunch after the tour. This bi-coastal presentation provides an overview of tall timber code pathways and key design considerations. It also compares provisions in the California Building Code and New York State Building Code. Key topics include construction types\, height and area limits\, fire-resistance requirements\, and timber exposure allowances. The session will examine design considerations for tall timber buildings\, including structural systems\, fire performance\, and regional factors such as seismic demands in California and weather protection in New York. DESCRIPTION:Regional In-Person Seminar + Tour (East Lansing\, MI)\nJoin us for a unique two-part event featuring an educational seminar on mass timber design\, followed by a firsthand look at Michigan State University’s STEM Teaching and Learning Facility. \nMid-Rise Mass Timber: Construction Type Selection & Opportunities for Multi-Family Housing (2.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 2.0 PDH credits or 0.20 ICC credits) \nOpportunities for mid-rise mass timber construction are expanding\, particularly in multi-family housing\, as recent International Building Code (IBC) updates allow mass timber in buildings up to 18 stories. This session will explore construction type selection\, critical early design decisions\, and the use of mass timber in 4- to 12-story residential and mixed-use projects—including hybrid systems that combine mass timber with light-frame wood construction to address the “missing middle” in housing. Participants will review key code considerations\, including construction types\, allowable heights and areas\, and fire-resistance requirements\, with a focus on strategies for exposed timber. \nTour MSU’s Mass Timber STEM Teaching and Learning Facility (1.0 AIA/CES HSW LU\, 1.0 PDH credit or 0.10 ICC credit) \nFollowing the presentation\, attendees can tour MSU’s 121\,000 square-foot STEM Building\, which pioneered the first significant use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the state. The project features three stories of glulam post-and-beam construction with steel diagonal bracing\, CLT floor and roof decks\, and CLT walls in egress stairs.
